There needs to be a tool similar to both the variant maker and the fat quarter tool that will allow the easy creation of a product card with the same information as the parent fabric (variant) that will also allow transfer of quantity to it (fat quarter).
There needs to be some intelligence built in so that you’re not creating new cards if they already exist in the system.
We want to end up with for example, 3 product cards as such as:
- Purple felt - 15yrds in stock
- Purple felt 1yd - 2x 1yd each in stock
- Purple felt 2yd - 1x 2yd each in stock
For inventory purposes they all use the same SKU since you technically have 19 yards of the same fabric in stock.
Hi fellow shops, here’s the original request I sent to Support, with a little updating. I hope this gives you an idea of the business need we have, without getting into tools and solutions, so you can let them know if it’s something that would be useful for you too.
Often when we’re making kits, we end up with smaller chunks of fabric left over from multiple bolts. These are good size remnants - usually a yard or bigger - and not just something we’ll toss in the scrap bin or fat-quarter. We don’t want to roll multiple short pieces back on a bolt; they either don’t stay put or will annoy the heck out of customers that are looking for a longer continuous piece.
We have been bagging these individual pieces, adding the bolt’s label, plus a sticker showing the yardage enclosed. Then we ring as if we cut it off the bolt. That works when the only place we’re selling is in person.
But things get strange when our inventory is also posted to Shopify. For example, if I have three 1-yard pieces, Shopify will show 3 yards in stock, but it’s not 3 continuous yards, which is misleading. And right now, I don’t have a good way to keep the “precut” part of the inventory off Shopify.
The best approach I’ve got right now is to create new products for each of these precut chunks (“bella solid white precut 1yd” or “bella solid white precut 2yd”), but that could be a lot over time if we’re doing it regularly across various fabrics.
What I’d love is to be able to “split off” these precut pieces of a particular by-the-yard product, and have some kind of tie back to the parent (or even just the same name with “precut” added), so that if someone searches for “Bella white” they can see options to order off the bolt or if it works for them, just put the precut 1yard piece or the 2yard piece into their shopping cart.
Note - something like this might also work for those of you who want to cut fat quarters from the bolt and keep it linked back to the original fabric (rather than just generic FQ). The difference is just that my chunks are yards or bigger… yours would be FQs.
